When each machine needs descaling

The Bambino Plus describes its descaling alert as follows: ¹⁸

The machine will indicate that it requires descaling when the 1 CUP and STEAM button and the 2 CUP button flash alternately for 15 seconds. ¹⁸

Keep that exact pattern separate from its cleaning-cycle alert. If you are unsure which light is showing, check the model-specific indicator meanings. ^{18 29}

How do I find my Sage hardness level?

The Barista Express UK and Bambino Plus EU English instructions checked here do not give a method for testing hardness, interpreting a hardness test strip or entering a numbered hardness setting on the machine. Neither accessories list names a water-hardness test strip. This is a gap in those editions, not a claim about every Sage manual or what the machines can do. ^{27 28}

Ask Sage how to establish the applicable hardness level for your exact model before choosing a hardness-based interval. These guides give descaling timings for levels 4 and 6 only; they do not provide a complete hardness scale or an interval for every possible level. Do not borrow a test-strip scale or a settings procedure from another model. ^{1 13 27 28}

The Barista Express also mentions level 2, but that passage concerns water-filter life: it extends the stated filter capacity from 40L at level 4 to 60L at level 2. It is not a descaling interval. ²⁶

A supplier's soft band does not identify your Sage level

Severn Trent's soft band is 0–50 mg/l as calcium carbonate. Thames Water's is up to 100 mg/l CaCO3, also calcium carbonate. The suppliers therefore use different boundaries for soft water. The Sage editions above do not give a conversion from either supplier's band to the numbered level used for descaling. ^{23 24 25 27 28}

Model-specific warnings

• Barista Express: the warning says never to remove or completely empty the tank during descaling. A later step says to empty the solution, followed by removing and rinsing the tank after descaling. The emptying instruction appears to conflict with the warning. ^{3 4 5}
• Bambino: the warning says never to remove or completely empty the tank during descaling. Later steps say the solution is used up, the cycle pauses, and the tank is rinsed, refilled and replaced. Those steps appear to conflict with the warning. ^{10 11}
• Bambino Plus: the warning says never to remove or completely empty the tank during descaling. A later step says the solution is used up, the cycle pauses, and the tank is refilled and replaced. That step appears to conflict with the warning. ^{16 17}
• Gaggia Classic E24: its restriction is on the descaler. The manual rules out vinegar and other descaling agents, not just particular strengths of them. ^{19 22}

For the Sage tank instructions, ask Sage to clarify the apparent conflict for your model before starting, rather than improvising a sequence. ^{3 4 10 11 16 17}

Keep filter replacement and cleaning separate

A filter change is not a descaling cycle. The Bambino guide gives filter replacement after 3 months or 40L and says this reduces the need to descale; it still specifies the combined cleaning-and-descaling alert. For the other routine jobs, use the separate maintenance tasks rather than treating every cleaning job as descaling. ^{12 7}
